In this hands-on presentation we take a trip around the world, visiting each continent to learn about different cultures - their history and uniqueness - all through their works of art. There is time for discussion, questions and answers and the challenge to figure out where pieces come from and what materials they are made out of. Pieces include: Indonesian cloth batiks; Inuit scenes carved in stone from Canada; Asian landscapes made from bamboo; Egyptian paintings on papyrus; copper artwork from Russia and the Middle East; Cambodian temple reliefs on rice paper; banana leaf pictures from Kenya; wooden sculptures from Ethiopia and Bolivia; plus many more.
World Citizenship Through the Arts reinforces the unique contribution every country/culture has to offer to this world- it upholds the value of diversity. This is a thought provoking, perspective broadening, hands-on presentation for children ages 5 and up; they are encouraged to touch, hold, critique, study, and enjoy all the pieces.
"My purpose is to expose audiences to a wide variety of art from around the world in order to stimulate greater awareness of and appreciation for the world community. Art transcends intellectual barriers and communicates ‘heart to heart’. I aim to inspire audiences via the plethora of materials and styles used for creative expression; some aspects of the art are unique to the locality (materials available, nature depicted), some are universal (themes - family, work, play). This presentation fosters global awareness, specifically geography, zoology, and culture. It naturally hones deductive reasoning skills and careful observation as participants strive to ascertain the art piece’s origin.
My family and I have traveled to numerous countries on peace missions and have worked closely with international communities at home and abroad. On this foundation, I desire to be a ‘goodwill ambassador’, building bridges of understanding and comfortable familiarity whilst promoting participants to become peace-loving global citizens".

"Absolutely fascinating!"

"Our classes are very ethnically mixed. Some of the students were so excited when they saw pieces from their home country; they felt proud and happy."
-Teacher, Rosa Lee Carter Elementary School
"Thank you for putting on such a phenomenal program! I’ve been telling everyone else at the library how great it was. I love that you trusted the kids to touch the art. And then I found I enjoyed touching it, too! You gave them lots of instruction, but it worked great the way you gave them time to explore the art in between. The activity where they look for art that’s on the wrong table and can carry it to the right place themselves was an excellent way to get them thinking more deeply about the art. And of course, you got them thinking about how art is made, too. And about peace between cultures. I was so impressed!"
-Sondra Eklund, Youth Services Manager at City of Fairfax Regional Library
