‘WREN’' (1955-1999)My younger sister, Renetta Paulette Auchinleck- Johnson, was a gifted artist. Not only could she draw beautifully (she was the botanical illustrator for Bishop Museum; many of her works capturing Hawaii’s flora and fauna are housed in the state’s historical museums), she also wrote and illustrated numerous children’s books and was exceptional in macramé, knitting, crocheting, making lace- just about any arts and crafts she chose to do. While living in Hawaii in the 80’s she started a non-profit, “B’ Cause”, in order to support worthy causes with her art. She created artwork at discounted rates for other non-profits and also raised money for them through the sale of her art. The story goes that she donated so much art to one environmental group they named a whale after her: "Wren" (her art name).
To honor my sister’s memory and keep her good work growing, I re-established the organization with a slight name change, for clarity. Currently, Art B Cause is an LLC, but I continue to serve the local and global community in Wren’s tradition: offering free art classes to children in low income areas; painting murals in family shelters and schools; and sharing creative projects with hospitalized, special needs, and elderly individuals. |
